The site highly recommends Phoenix oil, which has the advantage of not being harmful to the skin.
Other solutions are possible, such as gun maintenance oils (like ACF50, Armistol, Froglube) or WD40, but they are not ideal in terms of smell or for the skin. It is important to wipe the instrument with a microfiber cloth after each use and keep it very lightly oiled.
Cleaning with alcohol followed by a few drops of oil spread evenly on the instrument is sufficient. The frequency of maintenance will depend on the frequency of use and the environment. For example: a high humidity level in the air or salty air are sensitive parameters for metals. It is important to be more rigorous in such conditions.
Simple recipe:
I currently use a mix of camellia oil and fractionated coconut oil. These oils can be found both organically, as a cosmetic base, and in specialty stores for professional tool maintenance. Fractionated coconut oil is used by many Handpan players for maintenance. It has the advantage of not solidifying easily and remains very fluid. This makes application easier. A few drops are sufficient.
Important tips:
After playing, wipe your instrument with a soft microfiber cloth to remove any traces of moisture or other residues (sweat, grease, dust, etc.).
Keep it slightly oiled.
Never play your instrument in the sun. If it has been exposed accidentally, let it cool down before playing.
Play gently. It is a sensitive instrument whose sound is enhanced by delicate touch. But I think you already felt that.
About once a month, clean the entire shell with alcohol and apply a suitable oil.
Do not play with mallets, sticks, etc.
Do not store the instrument in a humid environment or subject it to shocks.
Do not store the instrument in its case, as it may retain moisture. The case is only for transport.
After a trip, it is better to let the instrument acclimate to its new environment for a while.
